It is a venture of Birla Technical Services and was established in Kolkata, West Bengal India in 1942. Hindustan Motors was the largest producer of automobile cars in India until Maruti Udyog came in. The Ambassador, the most popular car of Hindustan Motor’s kitty was widely used as taxi cars and for official government duties for years.
Hindustan Motors in the post-independence era had a lot of tie-ups with foreign multinational companies such as Bedford Trucks, Vauxhall Motors and Allison Transmissions (for heavy types of machinery). Initially in collaboration with Terex, the company later started its own plant in Thiruvallur near Chennai with Caterpillar Inc. The company also tried its hand at the tractors and agricultural and construction automobiles by starting Tractors and Bulldozers Private Ltd and gained a lot of success in it over the years.
However, after losing a majority of its customers to new automobile companies, the biggest break for Hindustan Motors in the later stages of the 19th century came when multinational companies in order to spread their market in the Indian sub continent and bounded by Governments regulations began entering the Indian Market through its joint ventures with Indian companies like Hindustan Motors. Companies such as Mitsubishi, Isuzu were the major two names who collaborated with Hindustan Motors.
